Hildibrand Manderville is a goofy character, and deserves a goofy deck. I gave him an army of heroes, soldiers, spirits, treasures, zombies, wizards… if there’s a token it’s probably in this deck.
There’s a few good Limit Breaks you can put in the Command Zone, but ultimately I chose Lingering Souls because it’s cheaper than Aerith Rescue Mission and the tokens fly, but you lose access to flashback. Sure, the rescue mission brings out an extra hero, so maybe you’re into that. Another good Limit Break is Cornered by Black Mages but the
in it’s casting cost makes it a little harder to cast in the deck. The sacrifice effect is nice though. The Crystal’s Chosen is an option, but
is so expensive.
This is a pretty interesting commander card, actually, as you can cast it as an Adventure from your command zone. This puts it into exile, which you can either choose to leave in exile (relatively risk free!) and cast it without paying the command tax, or you can put it back in the command zone (but why?). When Hildibrand Manderville dies on the battlefield, you can choose to leave him in your graveyard. This is relatively risk free as well, but you have to be very careful to cast him from your graveyard on your next turn or he’s stuck there unless you can fish him out of your graveyard by another means (such as exiling your graveyard, which would make a state-based effect trigger allowing you to put him back in the command zone).
Effectively, Hildibrand Manderville will never cost commander tax under most normal play.
